We all start developing emotions from the moment we are born. Caroline believes it is vitally important to help parents and caregivers ensure that their infants and children are able to develop those emotions successfully with the assistance from their primary caregivers. She feels that therapy between parents and their children should be a welcoming playful environment designed to help families connect and express themselves successfully.
Caroline utilizes a system theory when working with young children and their caregivers because children develop based on their system. This is often coupled with behavioral therapy to ensure that boundaries are set ensuring that children feel safe.
Caroline specifically has a passion for Infant Mental Health and working with those diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. Infant Mental Health s the understanding that children 0-5 react to adversity and trauma with mental health needs. Specifically with the rapid growth of infants and young children’s brains, they are susceptible to mental health needs that will appear through behavior expressions and mental health disorders in later life. Providing Infant Mental Health Services allows for children 0-5 to understand, manage and regulate emotions and subsequent behaviors through their primary relationships. Treatment for infant mental health involves enhancing the relationship between a child 0-5 and their primary caregiver to allow for the expression and management of emotions. Infant Mental Health Practices also allows for children to develop healthy social emotional skills as they begin to navigate social environments such as daycare and early childhood education programs.
During an infant mental health assessment an observation by the treating therapist will be able to help understand your infant/young child’s level of comfort with expressing their emotions to their primary caregiver. This will be observed through the child searching out the caregiver for assistance, ability to regain a calm state with assistance from the caregiver, checking in with the caregiver when engaging in a new environment and other general parent/child interactions. Following the assessment different areas will be targeted to help decrease negative behaviors and increase positive relationships. For infants and younger children, therapy will work with parents and children on regulating sleep, expressing emotions and emotional identification. With young children and toddlers, Caorline will work on discipline techniques that provide structure and a sense of safety to the child. Occasionally parent only sessions will take place to talk through behaviors that are happening at home and provide techniques to be used on a day to day basis. Most sessions will revolve around play as this is an integral part of child development and is vital for social emotional development.
Individuals with autism have complex emotions that are often left unaddressed through solely behavioral based therapy. It is Caroline’s belief that providing a therapeutic space for children and families living with autism will allow for increased management of emotions and subsequent behaviors. Allowing a space for individuals with autism to explore his/her understanding social and emotional interactions, and allow a venue to explore those interactions can offer supplemental assistance to behavioral based therapy. Caroline believes that this can be achieved with both communicative and non communicative children through play and social emotional interactions within the therapy setting
