What led you into the field of Psychotherapy and Counseling ?
I found that many people seeking help from me needed more than simple advice
or to be "told what to do." They really needed someone who would come
along side of them, partner with them, and seek solutions to their difficulties
in tandem with them. I was intrigued by this discovery and realized that in
order to do this work optimally, I would need to train at the highest levels.
This would enable me to best understand the mental and emotional intricacies
of the human person and ways in which to be of most help to them.
Does teaching help you in your work as a therapist and counselor ?
Yes it does. I believe teaching keeps me fresh and in tune with what is most
effective for doing this important work. I currently teach graduate students
who are seeking skills in the field. I find this particularly rewarding given
that these students have an earnest desire to help persons find ways to enrich
their own lives more fully. Watching their enthusiasm as they see people move
toward more effective living is a thrill. Also, the sense that I have the opportunity
to give something back to the field by training others is truly a wonderful
experience.
What other interests bring your life fulfillment ?
I enjoy my own family immensely. We spend as much time as is possible together
camping, going to ballgames and riding our motorcycles. Travel is also important
to me as my two grown children live in Washington State. Being a parent has
been the biggest and most rewarding effort of my life. Additionally, as a person
belonging to five dogs, I find my interactions with them to be of immense satisfaction.
They keep me young...I think!
