Feeling a sense of belonging is one of our most essential needs in life. Negative or invalidating experiences can interfere with our natural ability to feel open to finding our own sense of belonging.
I’ve had the privilege of using art therapy with individuals on the Autism Spectrum, Veterans, and older adults. In all of these experiences, it has become clear just how important it is for people to feel a sense of belonging and to know that their story matters.
Art therapy offers an embodied approach to finding connection and expressing what feels true. Sometimes choosing a color, working with clay, or creating a story can help express something that feels too big, confusing, or difficult to put into words.
For children in particular, art can provide another way to communicate, explore feelings, and make sense of their experiences. Children often understand images and storytelling in a way that feels natural to them. For some children, traditional talk therapy does not address the whole of what they need. I’m passionate about inviting in other opportunities for expression alongside talking things through. For many people, words come more easily after the body is engaged.
I primarily work with children and adolescents experiencing anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, and difficulties navigating challenging transitions.
My approach is informed by neuroscience and an understanding of the body-brain connection and how it responds to stress. I also draw from Gestalt therapy, which encourages us to look at the larger picture, consider systemic factors, and understand how challenges can make sense within the context of the greater whole.
My hope is to create a space where you feel safe, understood, and supported. In that environment, we can begin to make sense of your experiences, find your voice, and cultivate a greater sense of connection and belonging.
