Notes on being a man

“Notes on Being A Man,” by Scott Galloway

I am typically in the midst of reading half a dozen books at a time, laboring under the illusion that I can learn everything, all at once. So when a book grabs my attention solidly enough that it is (almost) all I am reading, I know it’s something special. This is one of those books. The author is a marketing professor at NYU, so is clear that this is a memoir, rather than a scholarly treatise, although he does an excellent job of drawing upon the research in our field. This book grew out of Galloway’s experience as a son and a father, as well as years of mentoring young men; all of which heightened his awareness that boys and men in our culture are in crisis. Unfortunately, ignoring their problems has led to a vacuum that, all too often, is filled by misogyny, anger and despair. When men don’t flourish, women and children don’t flourish. (And vice versa, but that isn’t the focus of this book.) This book is filled with an abundance of ideas and wise advice that will leave the reader inspired to think about solutions, rather than judgment and criticism.
